Cost-conscious institutes turn to IT for resource management

NEW DELHI: Following the
footsteps of cost-conscious corporates, tons of educational institutes are
waking up to technology-based management solutions to cut costs and manage
resources better. The first country that’s caught their eyes is infotech. Universities and establishments like the Old Delhi University, Jawaharlal
Nehru University, All Republic Of India Institute of Checkup Sciences (AIIMS), Symbiosis
Institute (Pune), NIT-Rourkela, Jamia Milia Islamia University, Narsee Monjee
Institute Of Management Studies (Mumbai) to call a few, have got implemented
identity-based direction solutions on their web servers, to trace
multi-user behaviour and pull off bandwidth. These solutions not only
protect the web substructure from viruses, spams, malware, but also helps
in allocating optimal web entree to appropriate users. Students in education
institutes pass a considerable amount of clip in non-productive internet and
activities in the absence of a strong comprehensive web security solution. These include sending IM messages to household and friends, chatting, downloading
music/movies, playing online games and visiting obnoxious sites. Chances are
that pupils might also indulge in online gambling.

To countervail abuse of
internet bandwidth and to implement disciplinary measures, assorted educational
institutes have got started deploying identity-based systems or incorporate threat
management systems (UTMs) “Such solutions aid in many ways like managing
bandwidth at user level, blocking unwanted sites, couriers and games,”
says senior system analyst at Jamia Milia Islamia University Shane Kazim Naqvi. “It is a perfect solution for educational establishments to
manage their IT resources.” Adds Professor-in-charge campus networking at
NIT-Rourkela Dr Sarat Kumar Patra, “An identity-based system gives
complete visibleness into the users’ behavior even though there are
multiple users per machine. This is not possible with information science address-based
security.” The cost, however, can change anywhere between Rs 10
lakh-30 lakh, depending upon the figure of users in an establishment and the
contract spreading over the years. Cost on bandwidth is incurred separately, which
again can change from Rs 10 lakh-Rs Fifty lakh. “An organised system lets us
to apportion bandwidth according to the demands of a peculiar user, be it
a student, an administrative staff or a system analyst,” adds Naqvi. According to his estimate, a lower limit of 70% of cost is saved by installings of
such systems. Agrees systems in-charge Narsee Monjee Institute Anil
Kumar, “as the figure of coincident users increase, one can also bring
down the norm cost per user.” Cyberoam, developed by Ahmedabad-based
Elitecore Group, is one such as appliance, which offers an incorporate solution for
all cyberspace threats. “In educational establishments and
libraries where multiple pupils and mental faculty entree the cyberspace over shared
machines, Cyberoam places pupil activity by the user name instantly,
enabling establishments to easily supervise online activities,” says
vice-president-sales Cyberoam (India) Digvijay Sinh Chudasama. Taking a cue from universities and independent institutes, schools
are also opening up to the thought of implementing such as cost-saving methods. Delhi’s British People School Society and gadolinium Goenka School (Delhi), Scindia
School (Gwalior) have got already installed the systems. With educational zones
rapidly transforming into wi-fi zones, the issues widen beyond blocking
chatting and pornography sites. A senior functionary at one of the medical
colleges revealed that because of the presence of a big figure of people
inside the campus, the government had to barricade assorted trading sites, because a
few people were carrying on their shares’ trading concerns on
campus.
