Free education plan worth further study - Gary Post Tribune
Whether Gov. Mitch Daniels was serious last hebdomad about his proposal for free college instruction for some Hoosiers or simply playing a political card in an election twelvemonth stays to be seen.
It would be easy to state the governor was playing to the electorate, in that he is expected to have got got a stiff challenge in the autumn from either Jill Long Homer Thompson or Jim Schellinger.
Also supporting the contention that the governor's proclamation was more than political relation than matter is the fact that he had neither a figure for how much the programme would be nor a suggestion as to how it would be financed.
What Daniels would wish to make is supply two old age of free tuition to Ivy Technical School Community College or the equivalent at another school.
As a starting point, he suggested that pupils whose households make not transcend the state's median value household income of about $54,000 would be eligible.
One thing is clear -- the demand for such as a programme exists, particularly when many households don't have the degree of income they once did because of the outsourcing of occupations and other factors. And Hoosier State ranks 41st among states in the per centum of grownups with a two-year associate grade or higher.
"We've got so many immature people who alumnus from high school without any hope or maybe even aspiration to travel to school," Daniels said. "I'd wish to change their aspirations."
Also, the deficiency of a trained work military unit have been one of the unfavorable judgments of some houses looking to turn up here.
The governor asked for suggestions from the state's university leadership at a conference last week. Given the possible benefit of the program, we promote more than than the educational community to weigh in.
